For many parents, the end of Year 6 SATs feels like a natural stopping point. The pressure lifts, routines ease, and it can seem like the right moment to pause academic support.
In reality, this is one of the most important transition periods in your child’s education — and for our current Year 6 students at The Tutor Centre, this next phase is already planned.
Having worked closely with your child in the lead-up to SATs, we are now building directly on that progress to prepare them for a strong and confident start to Year 7.
From SATs Preparation to Secondary Readiness
Your child has spent months developing core Maths and English skills with us — mastering the fundamentals required for SATs success.
Rather than stopping there, we now use the remainder of the term to transition those same students into Key Stage 3 content.
This means:
- Extending the exact skills they have just secured
- Introducing new concepts they will meet early in Year 7
- Building confidence with more advanced material while support is still in place
Because we already understand each student’s strengths and gaps, this transition is targeted, efficient, and far more effective than starting again in September.
The Step Up from KS2 to KS3
The move to secondary school brings a noticeable increase in pace and expectation.
Students are required to think more independently, process more complex material, and adapt to different teaching styles across subjects.
In Maths, this means applying knowledge in multi-step problems and beginning algebra.
In English, it means analysing texts in more depth and producing more structured, accurate writing.
The key point for parents to understand is this:
The first Autumn term assessments in Year 7 often determine set placement — and those early impressions matter.
Students who are already familiar with the content have a clear advantage.
What Your Child Will Be Covering in Maths
For our current Year 6 students, Maths sessions now begin introducing and reinforcing key KS3 topics, while consolidating SATs foundations.
This includes:
Early Algebra
Students begin working with simple equations, understanding unknowns, and recognising patterns — giving them a head start on one of the most important KS3 topics.
Fractions, Ratios & Percentages at a Deeper Level
We move beyond basic fluency into multi-step problem solving, ensuring students can apply these skills confidently in more complex scenarios.
Structured Problem Solving
Students learn how to approach unfamiliar questions methodically — a key difference between primary and secondary Maths.
Building Comfort with Higher-Level Questions
By introducing slightly more challenging material now, students develop resilience and confidence before encountering it in school.
What Your Child Will Be Covering in English
In English, we shift focus from SATs-style answers to the skills required for success in secondary school.
Our current students will be developing:
Reading for Analysis
Understanding how to explain language, identify techniques, and interpret meaning — rather than just retrieving information.
Paragraph Structure & Extended Writing
Learning how to organise ideas clearly and write in more depth, preparing for KS3 and beyond.
Grammar, Punctuation & Accuracy
Ensuring technical accuracy keeps pace with more advanced writing expectations.
Confidence in Expression
Encouraging students to articulate ideas clearly — an essential skill across all secondary subjects.
Why This Final Term Is So Valuable
The weeks after SATs are often underused — but they offer a unique opportunity.
Students are:
- Academically “warm” from recent exam preparation
- More confident having just completed SATs
- In an ideal position to absorb new, more advanced content
By continuing tuition through this period, students effectively start Year 7 before they even arrive.
The Advantage Going into Year 7
Students who complete this transition phase with us typically:
- Settle quickly into new school routines
- Recognise topics being taught in early lessons
- Perform strongly in Autumn term assessments
- Secure placement in higher sets earlier
This early momentum is difficult to replicate later — and often continues through to GCSE.
For Parents Considering Derby Tutoring
For families not currently with us, this is also an ideal entry point.
Joining at this stage allows students to bridge the gap between SATs and secondary school with structure and clarity — rather than relying on trial and error in September.
If you are looking for Derby tutoring that supports not just exams, but long-term academic progress, this transition period is where we make a real difference.
A Natural Next Step
For our current Year 6 parents, this is a continuation of the journey your child has already started — not an add-on.
We will be using the remainder of the term to ensure they walk into Year 7 confident, capable, and ahead.
If you would like to discuss your child’s progress or how we will support them through this transition, feel free to get in touch.
