Guide to KS2 SATS Tests

The scores achieved by children in their KS2 SATS tests at the end of Year 6 play an important role in determining the sets they are placed in in Year 7 and their target GCSE grades in Year 11. As a result, effective KS2 SATS tutoring is essential to help students achieve the highest possible scores and make a confident transition to secondary school. This is something we consistently see in pupils who receive structured KS2 SATS tutoring at our centres in Derby and Burton, with targeted SATS preparation

What Are KS2 SATS?

KS2 SATS are compulsory national tests sat by all Year 6 pupils, usually in May, in Maths and English. These assessments measure pupils’ attainment at the end of primary school and are frequently used by secondary schools to inform early setting decisions. Strong performance at this stage can give children a clear academic advantage as they move into Year 7.

KS2 Maths SATS

There are three maths SATS papers:

  • Paper 1: Arithmetic, testing core calculation skills
  • Papers 2 and 3: Mathematical reasoning and problem solving

Many pupils find the reasoning papers the most challenging. Targeted KS2 Maths SATS tutoring at our centre helps children learn how to interpret questions accurately, apply the correct methods, and manage their time effectively. Parent and school feedback indicate that our focused support leads to significant improvements in confidence and academic performance.

KS2 English SATS

The English SATs consist of:

  • Paper 1: Spelling, Punctuation and Spelling (SPaG), requiring short, precise answers
  • Paper 2: A 20-word spelling test
  • Paper 3: Reading comprehension, assessing understanding and inference

Focused KS2 English SATS tutoring supports pupils in strengthening reading accuracy, improving written accuracy in SPaG, and becoming confident with exam-style questions. Parents regularly report noticeable progress in these areas following structured preparation soon after joining the Tutor Centre.

KS2 Science SATS

Science SATS are not compulsory for all pupils. Instead, a small number of schools are selected each year for national sampling, with tests taking place in early June. Parents can check with their child’s school in to see whether they have been selected.

The New KS2 SATS Scores Explained

Since the introduction of the new KS2 SATS in 2016, both the difficulty of the tests and the marking system have changed. The previous level system (Levels 3–6) has been replaced with scaled scores from 80 to 120, with 100 representing the national expected standard. These more rigorous tests mean fewer pupils achieve the expected score, making early and effective SATS preparation increasingly important.

Preparing Your Child for KS2 SATS

A Department for Education study found that pupils who did not reach the expected standard at KS2 were more likely to fall behind throughout secondary school and struggle to achieve five GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English. With large class sizes limiting individual attention, many parents in Derby and Burton choose to support their children further by:

  • Encouraging daily reading and discussing texts at home
  • Using KS2 SATS workbooks and trusted online resources such as BBC Bitesize
  • Arranging KS2 SATS tutoring with our experienced staff to accelerate progress

At The Tutor Centre, we find that pupils who begin SATS tutoring in Years 3, 4 or 5 are particularly well placed to achieve scaled scores above 100 by Year 6. Even students who join us in year 6 see a rapid improvement ahead of the SATS exams. Parents consistently highlight improvements not only in attainment, but also in confidence, exam technique, and readiness for secondary school—reflected in our strong local reviews year after year.
